Google releases KitKat 4.4.1 with big camera fixes for Nexus 5

Many Android owners are still waiting for KitKat to arrive on their phones, but Google has started rolling out a new version of the OS, Android 4.4.1, to the Nexus 5 and other Nexus devices.
Although 4.4.1 has been available for three Nexus devices since yesterday, the Nexus 5 appears to be the main beneficiary of the update, which brings a more responsive camera to the Nexus 5.
"It improves the camera with faster focusing, especially in low light, faster white balancing, for truer colours, the ability to pinch-zoom the viewfinder in HDR+ mode and less shutter lag," Google announced on Thursday.
The Nexus 5 has received glowing reviews, but the camera failed to impress, with ZDNet reviewers finding it was slow to focus and required good lighting to take decent photos, despite its HDR+ feature.
As Google explains, the Nexus 5's HDR+ feature is meant to help take better pictures in poor lighting or large contrast conditions by taking a burst of shots and melding them together. The update should improve HDR+ and other features of the camera, according to Google.
The company doesn't mention the update being available for other Nexus devices, however Android specialist site Android Central has posted links to Google servers hosting the update for the Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 (2013, LTE version).
Though many Android OEMs are still only getting around to rolling out Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, KitKat has seen an impressive rise in its share of Android versions on devices, hitting 1.1 percent of all active Android devices within one month of its October 31 release.
The new OS shipped with the Nexus 5 and has so far been rolled out to Google's Nexus phones and tablets, the Google Play Editions of Samsung's Galaxy S4 and HTC's One, and the Moto X in the US.

The HTC 5-inch phablet to be the Google Nexus 5?

It will soon be a year from the Samsung Galaxy Nexus announced, and if Google keeps with the tradition, we should be seeing its successor. According to a tip we received, the device to replace it might be the oft rumored HTC 5″ phablet, known as Droid Incredible X or One X 5. There’s no way to confirm the validity of the tip so take it with a pinch of salt, but it certainly sounds plausible.

Our anonymous tipster claims that the Google Nexus 5 will run on Android 4.1.2, which brings bugfixes, Project Butter improvements, extra lockscreen functionality as well as other minor tweaks. Its traditional for Google to launch new versions of Android with its product announcements, so releasing a new Jelly Bean version with the Nexus 5 would make sense.

On the hardware side of things, the Google Nexus 5 will reportedly offer a 1080p display and a Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset. While not impossible, the former seems rather unlikely, even if it’s not the first time that this rumor comes up. The first Google phablet will reportedly offer a 12MP main camera, teamed up with a 2MP front-facing snapper.

All of this will come in a super slim design and a large, 2,500mAh battery. Internal memory is going to be up to 64GB and there will be LTE connectivity.

Our tipster tells us this info comes from a very reliable source within HTC but, once again, there’s no way of confirming its legitimacy.

Android 4.4 KitKat Issues

If a collection of Android 4.4 KitKat bugs that a Nexus 4 users has found is any indication, Google still has a lot of work left to do on its brand new Android update, an update that is still only available on a handful of devices.

Google nexus 5

In November, Google released Android 4.4 KitKat for its Nexus devices including the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10. Almost immediately after it arrived, Nexus users began to complain about issues with the software. Many users started calling for a brand new Android 4.4.1 KitKat update with bug fixes.

Google rolled out such an update a few weeks later in the form of Android 4.4.1 KitKat, an update that worked to tackle issues and fix the Nexus 5 camera, which at the time was considered to be one of its biggest flaws. A short time later, Google pushed out Android 4.4.2 KitKat, an update loaded with security fixes, and an update that remains Google’s most current version of KitKat. Read more..

Polaroid’s new budget quad core tablets run KitKat out of the box

The budget tablet market has been going absolutely crazy in the last two years with the release of the Amazon Kindle Fire line and Google’s Nexus tablets. The Nexus 7 has been quite a success, and everyone seems to be trying to achieve the same. But instead of creating powerful, high-end tablets with a low price tag, companies try to undercut Google’s pricing at any cost.

Cell Phone Accessories

Polaroid’s newest announcement is the Q series of tablets, namely the Q7, Q8 (shown above), and Q10. These devices all run unnamed quad cores, but they distinguish themselves with Android KitKat 4.4, the newest version of Android some new devices still don’t come with. It’s nice to know you’re up-to-date even if you’re not spending much.

These devices will all sell between $129 and $179, with the most expensive model still besting the Nexus 7 in price by $50. Of course, you won’t get the same tablet experience or good looks. Would you buy a Polaroid tablet? Do you trust the company to keep its tablets updated? Leave a comment!

Android 4.4.2 Problems Persist As Nexus Users Call for Android 4.4.3

Weeks after its release, Google’s latest Android 4.4.2 KitKat update continues to frustrate Nexus users with an assortment of bugs and issues, many of which don’t seem to have a fix. And with no Android 4.4.3 KitKat update in sight, it appears that Nexus owners will be forced to rely on the Android community for help.

Google Nexus 5

In the beginning of December, Google quickly released Android 4.4.2 KitKat, a follow up to the Android 4.4.1 KitKat update that it had rolled out only a few days prior. Like Android 4.4.1 KitKat, Android 4.4.2 KitKat was and is aimed at enhancing the Nexus 5 camera while also providing various bug fixes and enhancements to Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 5, Nexus 10 owners, and beyond.

Nexus 5: If you want everything … for half price

Available unlocked for $350 on Google Play Store

The Nexus 5 is this year’s complete Google phone. It only costs $350 unlocked, which is about half price for a modern high-end smartphone, but does everything you want. This year’s model has LTE as well. It’s not going to win a beauty contest, but if you want a fast phone that gets updates directly from Google (no other Android phone is guaranteed to get any updates), then this is the device for you.

What the Android 4.4.1 update means for Google's Nexus 5 shooters

Google’s Nexus 5 marks a substantial advance in the frequently maligned imaging capabilities of the Nexus smartphone line. The camera’s optical image stabilization combines with its decent 8-megapixel sensor to deliver images that, while not class-leading, are certainly competitive.

However, in our review we found that the Nexus 5’s camera performance was undermined by speed issues: the camera app was slow to start up, exhibited frustrating shutter lag and felt pokey when focusing. Soon after the phone started shipping Google said it would address these issues, and it has delivered on its promise with the Android 4.4.1 update that’s been rolling out to Nexus devices since Friday. (Another update, Android 4.2.2, is already on the move as well, though it comes without the same sort of significant effects.)

We’ve put the refreshed Nexus 5 through its photographic paces and found that while the camera is indeed more responsive, Google also made other changes that may please some users but irritate others.

Google Provide Lukewarm Benefits

Google Nexus 5 Accessories

One sign that smart phones may be reaching an evolutionary plateau is that more so-called cool and innovative features become less useful. Another sign: Features such as large displays and good cameras are "improved" to the point where they actually interfere with the device primary function.

This seems to be the case with some of the latest models in our Ratings from Samsung, Nokia, Google, and others. For example the Nokia Lumia 1520 stretches the concept of "bigger screens are better" to 6 inches, leaving you with a device too big to hold comfortably with one hand. And the Samsung Galaxy Zoom, one of the first smart phones with an optical zoom lens, is too thick and bumpy to be used as a phone.

Even KitKat, the latest version of the very popular Android operating system that debuted on Google is Nexus 5, may have gone too far in its attempt to merge cellular-based messaging accounts with the Google ecosystem.

Google Nexus 5

This Android phone offers a high-quality, high-definition display, the convenience of wireless charging, and a fun option for taking 360-degree panorama stills. But since Nexus phones traditionally provide a no-frills showcase for the Android OS on which they run, it doesn't have the interface tweaks, camera tricks, or unique wireless-sharing options that phone makers throw on top of Android to leverage their brands. Nor does it have the nifty gesture and hands-free controls we have seen on the most recent models from HTC, LG, Motorola, and Samsung.

That was not a problem. But some of the new features built into Android 4.4 (KitKat) did prove frustrating to use. For example, Google is Hangouts app can now also handle your SMS and MMS messages so that your carrier-serviced messages and Google account can mingle on the same screen as your Google-based conversations and video calls. But we found that the screen clutter this sort of mingling produced actually made it harder to find text messages. And the enhanced Caller ID feature, which is supposed to show you the name and a photo of the business from where calls were placed, often lacked those details.

KitKat does add some useful touches. These include a shortcut to summoning widgets, wallpapers, and Google settings by long-pressing a clear spot on the desktop, and new built-in support for the step detectors and step counters of fitness apps.

Google releases Android 4.4.1 update

Only five weeks after the Android 4.4 flagship Nexus 5 started shipping, Google has released an over the air update that addresses some of the flaws found in the software. If you have the Nexus 4, 5, or 7, get ready for Android 4.4.1 to hit your device.

When the Nexus 5 was launched, it felt like an amazing piece of hardware that was somehow left unfinished before releasing it to the public. There were some strange bugs in audio, the camera was almost unusable if you needed a quick photo, and even if you took your time the chances of getting a great shot compared to other smartphones wasn’t particularly high.

There was also some odd spacing issues in the UI where icons didn’t line up, and when you put all of these things together it was frustrating to see a device with so much potential fall short. Fortunately, Google has acted swiftly to fix these problems by releasing Android 4.4.1 to Nexus devices.

Android 4.4.1 KitKat

The biggest user-facing change in 4.4.1 seems to be the Nexus 5 camera. It loads the app much faster, focuses on items faster, and includes a status bar for HDR+ photos so you know to try and keep still. There’s also some bizarre visual changes, like a small modification to the icon for settings and some changes to the drop shadows cast by folders on the homescreen. The Android RunTime has been made available to the other Nexus devices, where previously the option remained dark. Finally, some users have reported that the audio has normalized on the Nexus 5 with this update.

This update will be rolling out to each of the Nexus devices over the next few days, and if you’re impatient and know where to look you can find the .zip to install via ADB Side load, but it shouldn’t be long now.

Google has done well by moving so quickly to fix these issues, but it does still raise some questions regarding why the phone was released in the state it was to begin with.

Google sells out of black 16GB Nexus 5 smartphones

Nexus 5 With Android 4.4 KitKat

After shipping dates gradually increased over the last two weeks, the black 16GB model of Google's new Nexus 5 smartphone is sold out.

We are out of inventory. Please check back soon, the Google Play store said of the 16GB black model on Monday.

Shipment times have increased for other models, too. The white 16GB model, which like its black companion costs $350 unlocked, now ships in four to five weeks. The black 32GB model ships in three to four weeks, and the white 32GB model ships in two to three weeks; those cost $400.

The phone comes with Google's version of Android 4.4, aka KitKat, with none of the extra software and user-interface changes that other Android device manufacturers such as Samsung and HTC typically add in. The phone comes with a 5-inch 1920x1080 screen, a 2.26GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of RAM, an 8-megapixel image-stabilized camera, 4G networking using LTE, a 2,300 mAh battery, and wireless charging.

Google and the Nexus 5 manufacturer, LG Electronics, evidently are making phones as they go rather than building a huge inventory of phones in advance. Some Nexus 5 phones dipped briefly out of inventory an hour after going on sale. Since then, Nexus 5 shipment times have been extending. The black 16GB model has consistently showed the longest waits for shipment.

Sprint and T-Mobile are offering pre-orders of the phone, which also works on AT&T's network in the United States. The Nexus 5 doesn't work on Verizon's 4G network, though.
