Android 4.4 KitKat Issues

If a collection of Android 4.4 KitKat bugs that a Nexus 4 users has found is any indication, Google still has a lot of work left to do on its brand new Android update, an update that is still only available on a handful of devices.

In November, Google released Android 4.4 KitKat for its Nexus devices including the Nexus 5, Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and the Nexus 10. Almost immediately after it arrived, Nexus users began to complain about issues with the software. Many users started calling for a brand new Android 4.4.1 KitKat update with bug fixes.

Google rolled out such an update a few weeks later in the form of Android 4.4.1 KitKat, an update that worked to tackle issues and fix the Nexus 5 camera, which at the time was considered to be one of its biggest flaws. A short time later, Google pushed out Android 4.4.2 KitKat, an update loaded with security fixes, and an update that remains Google’s most current version of KitKat. Read more..

Galaxy Note 3 may get latest Android software in January

 Owners of Samsung’s two most popular devices may not have to wait much longer to get them upgraded to the latest Android software. French carrier SFR is claiming that both the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy S4 will start getting upgraded to Android 4.4 KitKat in late January or early February. Although upgrades on one French carrier don’t necessarily tell us whether upgrades will happen in a similar timeframe on American carriers, SamMobile notes that “SFR has quite the track record of giving away tentative dates for software updates even before Samsung makes an announcement,” so it wouldn’t be surprising to see both devices upgraded to KitKat on American carriers in early 2014 as well.

Google Provide Lukewarm Benefits

One sign that smart phones may be reaching an evolutionary plateau is that more so-called cool and innovative features become less useful. Another sign: Features such as large displays and good cameras are "improved" to the point where they actually interfere with the device primary function.

This seems to be the case with some of the latest models in our Ratings from Samsung, Nokia, Google, and others. For example the Nokia Lumia 1520 stretches the concept of "bigger screens are better" to 6 inches, leaving you with a device too big to hold comfortably with one hand. And the Samsung Galaxy Zoom, one of the first smart phones with an optical zoom lens, is too thick and bumpy to be used as a phone.

Even KitKat, the latest version of the very popular Android operating system that debuted on Google is Nexus 5, may have gone too far in its attempt to merge cellular-based messaging accounts with the Google ecosystem.

This Android phone offers a high-quality, high-definition display, the convenience of wireless charging, and a fun option for taking 360-degree panorama stills. But since Nexus phones traditionally provide a no-frills showcase for the Android OS on which they run, it doesn't have the interface tweaks, camera tricks, or unique wireless-sharing options that phone makers throw on top of Android to leverage their brands. Nor does it have the nifty gesture and hands-free controls we have seen on the most recent models from HTC, LG, Motorola, and Samsung.

That was not a problem. But some of the new features built into Android 4.4 (KitKat) did prove frustrating to use. For example, Google is Hangouts app can now also handle your SMS and MMS messages so that your carrier-serviced messages and Google account can mingle on the same screen as your Google-based conversations and video calls. But we found that the screen clutter this sort of mingling produced actually made it harder to find text messages. And the enhanced Caller ID feature, which is supposed to show you the name and a photo of the business from where calls were placed, often lacked those details.

KitKat does add some useful touches. These include a shortcut to summoning widgets, wallpapers, and Google settings by long-pressing a clear spot on the desktop, and new built-in support for the step detectors and step counters of fitness apps.

Google accidentally bring the Nexus 5 online

Google just inadvertently unveiled the new Google Nexus 5 on the Google Play store, adding to it the starting price and some other tidbits of information that everyone has been eagerly waiting for.

This is what we know now:

• The Google Nexus 5 will retail for $349, for the 16GB model, a 32GB model will also be launched
• The Google Nexus 5 will feature a 2,300mAh battery
• The Google Nexus 5 will launch on October 28
• The Google Nexus 5 will run on the new Android 4.4 KitKat
• The Google Nexus 5 will have a 5-inch 1080p display
• The Google Nexus 5 will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC

This is what we don’t know:

• Will Android 4.4 KitKat devices taste like chocolate if you lick them?
• Will LG make enough Google Nexus 5 device to cope with demand?
• Will the rumoured $299 Nexus 4 LTE pack 8GB or 16GB of storage?
• Will the Google Nexus 5 last at least half a day of heavy usage off of that tiny battery?

For now, we will have to speculate, just 10 days to go until Google is set to unveil the new Google Nexus 5!
